Lower LimbA fracture in the lower part of the shin bone (tibia) is difficult to treat because the bones usually fall out of the correct position when they break. Surgery with metal implants is usually needed to hold the bones in place while they heal. But surgery to fix the broken bones is risky because the skin over the shin is thin.
Doctors argue about which type of surgical implant is best for treating a fracture of the lower part of the shin bone. Some doctors recommend a metal rod inside the bone called an 'intramedullary nail'. Other doctors prefer a metal plate fixed to the bone with special 'locked' screws.
FixDT was a randomised controlled trial comparing the two types of metal implant, and measured leg function, bone healing, quality of life, and complications to find out which technique gives the best overall results.
